As many as 50,000 trees will be planted and maintained in Navi Mumbai this monsoon, beginning June 5. The initiative is started by Navi Mumbai based NGO Welfare First Foundation along with Nerul CBD Belapur Walkers’ Association as an attempt to increase green covers in the city.
June 5, which marks the World Environment Day, will see NGO members along with chief guests including NMMC commissioner Tukaram Mundhe planting a few trees at the Parsik Hills.
"We are officially starting the drive on June 5 by planting a few trees at Parsik hills. The initiative will continue and we have already started spotting areas which need plantation," informed founder of Welfare First, Dr Varsha Rokade.
The NGO will approach members of residential societies and complexes to lend a hand in the plantations and look after trees around their areas.
"The NMMC is helping us with this initiative. To gain more support we need volunteers to take up the responsibility of maintaining these trees. Starting Sunday, we aim to plant 50,000 saplings and maintain them as well," Dr Rokade added.
