Pehchaan “Live Foundation” is an initiative to connect with the children in slums where social norms have broken down, education, values and parental supervision are seriously lacking. Pehchaan was formed in Mumbai in the year 2014 under the leadership of Mrs. Afsana. She started off by teaching children’s in a slum right across her residence in Mumbai. After continuously working for 4 years, we registered ourself as an NGO. Today, we have five centres in two districts of Bihar – Idgah Mohalla, Jakki Bigha and Mathuri in Rohtas district and Hajisubhan and Mobarakchak in Munger district, one centres in Mumbai – Koperkhairane and one in Kirti Nagar, Delhi. We have grown to more than 80+ volunteers (most of whom are youngsters) over such a short span of time . The father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi rightfully said, “A body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.”
We at Pehchaan are dutifully committed to offer the basic education and healthcare facilities to the underprivileged kids living in slums. Children form the pillar of the future society and it is extremely essential to strengthen those pillars for a better future. We believe that Knowledge (ज्ञान) is different from Education (शिक्षा). Education is simply the dissemination of information but knowledge is processing that information for social, economic and holistic progress. These children do attend their government-run schools, but they needed that extra looking after with a special emphasis on morality, values and life skills because a child’s personality is an outcome of the environment in which he/she is raised. Therefore, whether one needs to address the issues of poverty, surging population, unemployment or human rights, the best place to start with is education. Education will endow them to earn their own living, which is the primary concern of Pehchaan. Moreover, education encourages awareness on numerous social issues and evils among the people and helps them understand their rights and duties. Every children should be taught to stand up for what they believe in and we are trying our best in helping them by giving some of our time to these kids. With tens of thousands of underprivileged children in India, it’s an uphill battle. But we’re getting there and we’re equipping them with the essential tools to make their own future.
